The Stone Hedge Inn was a private residence before being converted to a restaurant and bed and breakfast inn.  To the best of our knowledge (mostly from stories from people who have known some of the home’s previous owners) the inn was built in 1934 by Tommy and Lily Costa of Ohio.  They used the home with its 170-plus acres as a mountain retreat.  The property had numerous owners until the late 1970s, when it was purchased and transformed into a business.  Most of the property was sold off through the years, and we now have 26 acres remaining with the main house, guest house and pool house containing our guest rooms.

The stonework of the buildings, typically called “stacked stone,” was done by local artisans and collected from the property after blasting it from the hillsides.  Much of the interior of the main house is finished in a combination of an Art Deco design with a Mediterranean flair, while the guest house and cottage are rustic, with their pine paneling and large stone fireplaces.

We are the third couple to own the business.  Having moved here in June 1995 from Bradenton, Florida, this is our first inn keeping adventure.  However, we are veterans of the restaurant business.  Since graduating from college, when degrees in marine biology did not prove fruitful, the restaurant business provided us with an income and a business education that, all together, prepared us for this very interesting lifestyle!
